If you’re looking to buy strawberries, the Berry Farm brand is one you may want to consider. It’s a family owned business that has become one of the leading producers in the world. They grow and sell blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. You can pick your own or get them pre-picked.
The berry industry has taken a hit in recent years, as the migration from Central America has diminished. However, a lack of severe weather has left the fruit in excellent condition. In addition to fresh berries, you can find jujubes, Chinese dates, mandarins, and other fruits at the Snohomish Farmers Market. During the holidays, berries can be a festive treat. Berries are also a nice way to ward off colds.
There are a number of farms in the area where you can pick your own berries. You can visit the Pick Your Own strawberry farm located just north of M-82 in Holton. A lot of the farms are open on weekends during the months of June through September. Others are open on weekdays. For the most part, the farms accept plastic.
Picha’s Berry Farm has two locations in the Puyallup area. It’s open in late summer and early fall, and offers a variety of berries, including blackberries, raspberries, and peaches. Customers are encouraged to wear masks and pick berries on both sides of the plant.
Another berry farm you can check out is Blueberry Farms, which is located just 45 minutes northwest of Houston. Depending on your location, you can choose to pick your own berries in a container or in a bucket. Once you’ve picked your berries, you can either bring them back to the farm or freeze them. Whether you’re picking your own or buying them, you’ll enjoy the freshness of the produce.
If you’re looking to get strawberries in the future, you might want to consider getting your hands on some of the new varieties being developed by the University of California, Davis. Knapp, the program leader, has secured a multimillion dollar grant to develop more varieties. He will release new cultivars in the fall.
Other berry options include fuyu persimmons, which are a type of superfruit. Despite the popularity of Fuyu persimmons, they’re only available for a short period of time each year. Also, the moschata, a type of musk strawberry, has a strong resistance to mildew.
One of the most popular berries at the grocery store is Driscoll’s strawberries. This particular cultivar was developed in France in the eighteenth century. Today, Driscoll’s produces sixty percent of all organic strawberries in the United States.
The company has a number of other cultivars that you can purchase. Their Camarosa and Camino Real plants have excellent mid season production. They’re compact, but their fruit is large and sweet. These plants are less vigorous than the Camarosa.
For those who can’t get to a U-pick farm, you can still get your berries from the Washington Farmland Trust. They provide berries at the Snohomish Farmers Market and other venues throughout the state.
